Care Centers Avoid Rate Cuts in Legislative Special Session

The outcome of the short legislative special session last week turned out to be much more positive for care centers than we had feared for the last few months. The proposed cuts in operating rates, which were in the Governor’s budget proposal and the House budget bill, were dropped from the final Health and Human Services (HHS) budget bill due to objections by the Senate.

The 2019 legislative session came to an end on May 20 with most of this year’s budget bills unfinished, including the Health and Human Services Finance bill. A special session will be required to get these bills across the finish line. What does that mean for us? We just gained the gift of time in our fight to stop the devastating nursing home cuts proposed by Governor Tim Walz and the Minnesota House. But time is running out – the special session may take place on Thursday and Friday.
Legislature Returns: House Votes on HHS Bill, AARP Holds Telephone Town Hall with Gov. Walz

The Minnesota Legislature returned from its spring recess this week and wasted no time in getting down to business. Today in the Minnesota House, lawmakers will be voting on the House HHS Finance omnibus bill (HF2414). Tomorrow AARP will host a Telephone Town Hall with Governor Tim Walz and Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan on their key priorities for the remainder of the legislative session, which will include discussion on the protection of older adults in assisted living settings.
