Seeking LGBTQ Needs Assessment Survey Participants

Since 2002, there has been a Needs Assessment Survey every ten years to better understand social determinants of health and individual health outcomes for aging LGBTQ Minnesotans. The 2022 Survey is getting underway, and JustUs Health and the University of Minnesota are joining together in a community-wide effort to provide actionable insight into the health needs of aging LGBTQ Minnesotans. They seek survey participation from LGBTQA Minnesotans 50 years and older to help inform policy and funding decisions at a state level for the estimated 48,000+ LGBTQ seniors living in our state.
MDH May Soon Resume Standard Nursing Home Surveys

As we noted in last week’s newsletter, new CMS criteria for what triggers focused infection control (FIC) surveys in nursing homes will have the effect of reducing the volume and frequency of FIC surveys for many care centers. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) signaled this week that these changes may free up enough time for surveyors to resume standard recertification surveys. MDH did not say definitively that it plans to do this, or identify any concrete timeline, but they told us they are exploring it.
New Criteria Should Reduce Number of Infection Control Surveys for Nursing Homes

CMS issued a revised memo QSO-20-31-ALL-REVISED on Jan. 4 detailing new triggers for focused infection control (FIC) surveys. In addition to the two triggers previously identified, CMS has added 5 additional scenarios that will be used to help state survey agencies more narrowly target FIC surveys. The new criteria are effective immediately and will have the effect of reducing the volume of FIC surveys for many providers.

Deficiency Analysis: Are Nursing Homes Getting Better or Worse?

A new report shows that over the course of a five-year period, 94% of the deficiencies cited on nursing home surveys were in the "less serious" categories defined as F or below on the scope and severity grid. However, the report also noted that 31% of nursing homes had at least one repeat deficiency during the review period.

LeadingAge Minnesota is working with the Minnesota Department of Health and other stakeholders to develop another series of provider-surveyor joint training sessions for care centers. Specific locations are still being finalized, but the dates are confirmed: Oct. 30, Oct. 31, Nov. 1, Nov. 8 and Nov. 9. There will be two metro sessions, and one each in northern, central and southern Minnesota.
