State to Add PDPM Items to the MDS
Posted on September 16, 2020 by Jeff Bostic
Last week MDH announced that Minnesota has asked CMS to calculate the PDPM classifications on the OBRA assessments that are not used for Medicare payment.
This means the PPS items necessary to calculate the PDPM classifications (GG0130, GG0170, I0020, I0020B, J2100, and J2300-J5000) will be added to all OBRA assessments effective 10/1/2020.
The statement indicates that the state is not going to begin using the PDPM classifications for Medicaid payment. The change will allow the state to collect PDPM payment codes and compare to Resource Utilization Group (RUG) IV, which could inform an eventual transition from RUG-IV to PDPM for Medicaid. For the foreseeable future, Minnesota will continue to use the RUG-IV classification system for payment purposes.
