Salon and Outdoor Visit Update
Posted on June 2, 2020 by Jodi Boyne
The pressure is building for nursing homes and assisted living to be able to provide salon services in thier settings and host outdoor visits with residents and families.
We view both of these issues as respect and dignity for those we serve, and see the value of connection and welll-being that comes with seeing families and loved ones again. But we also know that any lessening of visitor restrictions must be accompanied by infection control measures that prevent the transmission of the virus in a setting and to its residents and staff.
Please know we continue to share your questions and concerns with the Minnesota Department of Heatlh (MDH) as we work with them on guidance in these two areas. We participated in a meeting wtih MDH this week and those discussions will continue in the days ahead.
While MDH has not yet changed its directive on visitor restrictions, we are strongly advocating for an adaptation that would safely accommodate salon services and socially-distanced outdoor visits.
If you have questions, concerns or ideas on guidance, contact Kari Everson at keverson@leadingagemn.org.

As providers, we are our resident’s foremost advocate for their Rights. After nearly 15 weeks of lockdown, no family visits, no smiling face that isn’t hidden by a mask, no hand-holding, no hugs. Can you even imagine?
Our residents are well aware of the risks. They are informed and are an active part of our local remedies to alleviate the risk. How can we continue to tell them no? How can we continue to disallow their family’s visitation?
We MUST find a suitable compromise to settle their increasingly concerns and sadness while we adapt to the demands of Infection Control.
Outside family meetings, less than 10 and 6ft distance IS that compromise. How long does anyone think our residents can sustain this type of incarceration?
As Providers and Advocates of their rights, we MUST do better than we are. Asking them to wait to the back of the line while they’re watching thousands of people dancing in the streets of our Metro Area is an increasingly impossible task.
