Minnesota Human Services Tour Highlights Session Victories for Elderly Waiver
Posted on August 31, 2023 by Erin Huppert
Members and staff of the House and Senate Human Services Committees went into the community last week to experience firsthand the care given by long-term care providers, see the impact of their legislative actions, and talk about priorities for 2024. Over a single day, they visited five providers of senior care and disability services.
Thanks to Open Circle of Heritage Park, legislators and staff saw the adult day program and met with several participants and staff. It was an opportunity for legislators to hear how essential these services are and how critical the increases in Elderly Waiver will be in helping to rebuild this vital service after the pandemic.
Due to the unique features of this setting, legislators also had the chance to envision how the Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) could help Minnesota seniors thrive. With an actuarial study and implementation plan underway with DHS, it was a timely way to reinforce PACE’s value proposition.

Even though the Legislature is not in session right now, strengthening relationships with policymakers is a year-round activity. We must continue to engage with them both in our requests for support and in recognizing their efforts. Building a collaborative partnership is the best way to ensure seniors have access to care in all the places they call home.
What happens next?
Legislators will return to St. Paul on Feb. 12, 2024. In the meantime, they are meeting with constituents in their districts through town halls, coffee shop chats, and local fairs. Watch for opportunities to engage with your state representative and senator.
