LZ 200: New Annual Report of Largest Not-For-Profit Senior Living Providers
Posted on November 20, 2018 by Jodi Boyne
LeadingAge and Ziegler has published the 15th edition of the LeadingAge-Ziegler 200 (LZ 200) Report.
This eagerly anticipated annual report includes the number of units and communities, and reveals insights into trends in home and-community-based services, third-party management, rental Life Plan Communities, technology adoption, joint ventures, and future growth plans.
Thirteen LeadingAge Minnesota members are listed in the top 200 and Minnesota has the most market rate senior living communities at 220. The LZ 200 is not designed to be a qualitative report or an endorsement of any specific organization.
Key Findings:
- Systems range from 19,645 units to 30 units
- The 10 largest providers represent 30 percent of the total number of units for all systems in the LZ 200.
- The average annual growth rate in total units over the last 10 years for independent living and assisted living is 2.7 percent, but there is a decline in nursing care beds.
- Memory care units are becoming increasingly important of the annual unit counts, with 60 percent of the LZ 200 offering specialized units.
- Growth in the LZ 200 is primarily happening through expansion within existing campuses and there is an uptick in the number of organizations growing through affiliation, acquisition or merger.
- Approximately 45 percent of the LZ 200 offer some type of home-and community-based services to non-residents.
- 80% of the LZ 200 communities use electronic point of care/point of service documentation systems; nearly 70 percent use electronic health/medical records; and adoption is lower for health and wellness technologies, such as medication monitoring or telehealth remote monitoring.
- Four out of 10 providers also indicated they are engaged in a formal health care reform contract, whether that be an Affordable Care Organization or a bundled payment agreement. This has grown from roughly 25 percent to 2013 to 49 percent in 2017.
The 2018 report demonstrates the significant role that LeadingAge member not-for-profit organizations play in the aging services field. Who are the largest senior living providers in the nation?
