Klobuchar Introduces Bill to Help Family Caregivers
Posted on June 19, 2018 by Jodi Boyne
Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) has introduced the Americans Giving care to Elders (AGE) Act, which would provide a tax credit for caregivers faced with the difficult task of helping older adults remain in their home.
The AGE Act would allow family caregivers to qualify for a tax credit to offset elder care expenses of up to $6,000 per year.
Physical and/or cognitive impairment will cause about half of all older adults to lose the ability to care for themselves during their lifetimes. About 75 percent of older adults who receive care in the community report that this care comes exclusively from unpaid family caregivers.
Facilitating family caregiving is an important part of the solution to the challenges of providing and paying for long-term services and supports. We will continue working with policymakers and other stakeholders on this and other effective solutions to these challenges.
